Details: Synopsis Published to coincide with the 75th anniversary of the foundation of the Irish police force, this social history traces its origins, birth and early life, compiled to include archival material from the National Archives, The author tells of the influence of the RIC on the early Garda Siochana, the Kildare Mutiny, the decision to have an unarmed police force, the Broy Harriers, the attempt to make the force bilingual, involvement in sport, and the struggle of garda representative bodies to win for their members improved pay and allowances. Although archival material relating to the post-1952 period is not yet available, the author includes a chapter bringing the reader up to the anniversary year, including the recruitment of the first banghardai in 1959, the rising crime figures in the early 1980s, to the service of the gardai as part of the Un police forces in countries such as Croatia and Somalia in the 1990s.
